The 2025 General Assembly passed a resolution to amend the Virginia Constitution’s definition of marriage. The proposed amendment would replace the current language that recognizes marriage as only between one man and one woman with a provision that recognizes marriage between "any two persons," including same-sex and transgender individuals.

The marriage amendment passed both chambers of the General Assembly in 2025. The Democratically controlled General Assembly is expected to pass it again during the 2026 legislative session and put it on the ballot to be voted on by the entire Virginia electorate sometime in 2026.

We oppose the marriage amendment. We support traditional family values and oppose efforts to alter the historical definition of marriage. We believe voters should carefully consider the long-term social and legal impacts of redefining constitutional protections around marriage.
