The 2025 General Assembly passed a resolution to amend the Virginia Constitution’s definition of marriage. The proposed amendment would replace the current language that recognizes marriage as only between one man and one woman with a provision that recognizes marriage between "any two persons," including same-sex and transgender individuals.
The marriage amendment passed both chambers of the General Assembly in 2025. If passed again by both chambers during the 2026 legislative session, it will appear on the November 2026 ballot for voter approval.
We support traditional family values and oppose efforts to alter the historical definition of marriage. We believe voters should carefully consider the long-term social and legal impacts of redefining constitutional protections around marriage.
